ABOUT

DC Collage Artist Brianne Lanigan

Brianne Lanigan is a visual artist with a focus on surreal analog mixed media collage. She lives and works in the Washington D.C. area. She has had solo exhibitions during Art Basel Miami Art Week for three years with Superfine Art Fair. Lanigan has exhibited her art at art fairs and galleries in New York City, Washington DC, Los Angeles, Miami, and Scotland. Her cinematic work captures and evokes the wild spirit of dream worlds. Using raw, carefully focused emotion, Lanigan’s work serves as a commentary on social conscience. Most imagery is hand-cut from vintage magazines, including LIFE, dating back to the 1920s-1970s. Lanigan arranges and adheres these meticulously chosen images to a panel or canvas, with monochromatic backgrounds that she paints. Through the assemblage of these worlds, Lanigan reveals moments and truths from her own life with symbolic imagery. Lanigan captures the essence of movement and momentum in her art. Her surreal landscapes become a lush environment of self-discovery for the viewer and artist alike.

The mystical, ethereal undertones that reveal themselves in Lanigan's art are a natural part of her process. Tackling powerful subjects such as love and hope, corruption and deception, and the survival of the human spirit requires diving deep in order to create an experience on the canvas where viewers can find their own stories. Employing mixed media has granted Lanigan the ability to be an astute observer of the meaning and significance of events and situations and to communicate these observations in her artworks.
