Brianne Lanigan is a visual artist with a focus on surreal mixed media collage.
The mystical, otherworldly undertones that reveal themselves in Lanigan’s art are a natural part of her process. Tackling powerful subjects such as love and hope, corruption and deception, and the survival of the human spirit requires diving deep to create an experience on the canvas that viewers can find their own stories in. The subversive quality of her work reveals itself through layers of symbolism.
Using raw, carefully focused emotion, Lanigan’s work serves as a commentary on social conscience. Most imagery is hand-cut from vintage magazines, including LIFE, dating back to the 1920s - 1970s. Lanigan arranges and adheres these meticulously chosen images to a panel or canvas, with monochromatic backgrounds that she paints. Employing mixed media has granted Lanigan the ability to be an astute observer of the meaning and significance of events and situations and to communicate these observations in her artworks.
Lanigan lives and works in the Washington DC area. She has had solo booth exhibitions at the Superfine! Art Fair during Art Basel Miami Beach (2016-2018), as well as, in Washington, DC (2018) and New York City (2019).She has also exhibited in group exhibitions in notable galleries such as Van Der Plas Gallery (New York, NY) and Arthouse NYC (New York, NY). Her work has also been featured on the front page of Washington DC’s City Paper Arts.
